The language became widely adopted due to its simplicity and effectiveness in managing large amounts of structured data.

SQL's strengths include its powerful querying capabilities, standardized syntax, and widespread adoption. Weaknesses involve scalability issues with very large datasets and complexity in handling unstructured data. Competitors include NoSQL databases like MongoDB, Cassandra, and Redis, which offer better scalability and flexibility for certain types of data.

A SQL expert must have strong skills in writing and optimizing complex SQL queries, understanding relational database design and normalization, proficiency in using indexing for performance improvement, knowledge of transaction management and concurrency control, familiarity with stored procedures and triggers, and experience with specific SQL-based database systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
